About

Why Merchiston?
Merchiston is one of the UK’s leading boarding schools, and a member of the World Leading Schools Association (the only school in Scotland), offering the English curriculum, but with a global, outward-looking dimension. Approximately 65% of pupils board and a full boarding programme is provided, seven days a week. Merchiston is a remarkable school where boys gain a world-class, outward-looking education. Our smaller school community makes for meaningful and connected conversations, allowing us to get to know your son really well and ensuring we can support and motivate him in just the right way

University Success
Our excellent exam results consistently show a high proportion of our pupils heading to UK Russel Group Universities, such as Bath, St. Andrews, Oxford and Cambridge – as well as leading international institutions. In the past few years students have gained admission to Ivy League Universities such as Cornell and Brown, mini-Ivies such as Amherst and other prestigious academic and sporting universities in California, New York, Colorado and San Francisco.

Sport
There is a long and successful sporting tradition at Merchiston. Your son can choose from up to 20 sports. Sport is genuinely for all here. Your son can play for fun and fitness or to compete at the highest level, nationally and internationally. Thanks to the guidance of some of the country’s leading coaches, more than 60 Merchistonians have played senior international rugby and 24 international cricket. If you son is a talented tennis or golf player, he can enrol in our Tennis or Golf Academy offering elite training alongside a tailored academic programme (with unrivalled facilities too).

Co-curricular
The co-curricular programme delivers such life skills as leadership, teamwork, and mentoring. Music and Drama are major activities, involving pupils of all ages. There are numerous instrumental ensembles and choirs, as well as opportunities for individual instrumental lessons. There are also plentiful opportunities for those who would like to get involved in our STEM programme, which has been recently recognised with a STEM Nation Award.
