“A traditional full boarding boys’ school in Sherborne’s market town known for its excellent teaching, extensive offerings in the creative arts, and regular opportunities to mix with its nearby sister school”
About
Founded by King Edward VI in 1550, we are one of just a few full-boarding, all-boys schools in the UK and this, together with our strong partnership with Sherborne Girls, is what makes Sherborne Boys so special. Within this unique framework, Sherborne allows boys to develop in a safe environment whilst encouraging them to become self-reliant, confident and ready for the next stage of his life.
At Sherborne, we offer a first-class academic education but importantly, we believe in kindness and developing an empathy for others. Through inspiring teaching, we engage and guide each boy to pursue academic excellence and cultivate a lifelong love of opportunities outside the classroom, encouraging them to develop their sporting, artistic and creative talents through a rich and diverse co-curricular programme. Sherborne lies in the beautiful Dorset countryside and benefits from a direct train to and from London Waterloo.
Interesting facts:
- Sherborne was founded twice, as a cathedral school in 705 AD and re-founded in 1550 by King Edward VI! As such, it is one of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom.
- The School is steeped in tradition and as boys ascend the steps to the School’s own chapel, boys walk in silence, honouring those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and whose names are inscripted in the wall.
- Moving with the times, Sherborne has opened a multi-million pound Sports Centre this year benefitting both the boys and the local community.
- There is an historic window at the School called the Headmaster’s eye and even its security pass buzzers are disguised in the distinctive golden hamstone coloured stone of the School.
Weekend activities:
Weekends are busy at Sherborne with school on Saturdays and afternoons filled with sports and activities. Well known for its sporting provision, Sherborne also has an outstanding music programme with a choir of 106 boys and rarely is there a weekend without a concert or performance. The School prides itself on the breadth of its inclusive co-curricular programme; from bell-ringing and robotics club, to pottery and fives, there is something for everyone. Combined socials with Sherborne Girls take place across the year groups every week and activities range from dinner nights to cinema trips, from Ceilidhs to dodge ball tournaments and, when the weather allows, even outdoor cinemas. Sundays are also busy with a range of House trips such as go-karting, water parks, camping trips and so on – in short, the boys are kept active and occupied, whilst also allowing some downtime to recharge. Sunday evenings offer quiet reflection and chapel services, in preparation for the week ahead.
