Roedean School

"Every girl is put first at this academically-driven day and boarding school in Brighton, where an inclusive and nurturing community encourages confidence, independence and a global outlook."

About

Founded in 1885, Roedean is one of the United Kingdom’s most iconic girls’ schools, educating young women aged 11–18 in an exceptional coastal setting overlooking the English Channel. Combining day and boarding education, Roedean empowers girls to discover the extraordinary within themselves and develop the knowledge, character and self-belief to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Free from traditional stereotypes and limitations, girls are encouraged to find their voice, embrace opportunity and pursue ambitious goals with confidence. The school’s philosophy is built around fostering academic confidence, nurturing character and life skills, strengthened by sisterhood and enriched by its unique coastal location.

Through expert teaching, personalised pathways and a culture that inspires curiosity and independent thinking, every girl is empowered to achieve her potential. Emphasis is placed on STEAM education, encouraging students to develop the creativity, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills needed to become future innovators and leaders. Intellectual curiosity, oracy and critical thinking are nurtured alongside strong academic outcomes, preparing girls for success at leading universities around the world.

Roedean’s commitment to educating the whole person extends beyond the classroom. Through programmes such as the Roedean Diploma, Future Fridays and Wild Fridays, students develop leadership, resilience, communication skills and global awareness. Careers education, university guidance, mentoring opportunities and industry engagement help girls explore future pathways with purpose and ambition. An extensive co-curricular programme spanning sport, the arts, outdoor education and community engagement enables every girl to discover her passions and broaden her horizons.

Girls are strengthened through the power of sisterhood. Students from more than 40 countries form a vibrant and supportive community where every individual is known, valued and encouraged to flourish. Lifelong friendships, cultural understanding and a strong sense of belonging help girls develop confidence, empathy and a global outlook. These connections continue long after school through Roedean’s alumnae, offering mentorships and professional networks.

Roedean’s location is an integral part of the educational experience. Surrounded by sea, sky and open landscapes, students benefit from an environment that promotes wellbeing, perspective and resilience, while nearby Brighton provides access to one of the UK’s most creative and dynamic cities.

A Roedean girl leaves school as a confident, compassionate and globally minded young woman. She is intellectually curious, adaptable and ready to lead, equipped with the academic foundation, character and ambition to shape a meaningful future.
