Cheltenham College

"A highly regarded co-ed school that is known for its very strong family feel, dedicated teachers and outstanding pastoral care and provision across its whole range of academics, sports and arts"

About

Established in 1841, Cheltenham College is a distinguished co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 13 to 18. Located in the heart of Regency Cheltenham Spa, the College blends a rich heritage with modern facilities and a forward-thinking approach to education. There is a strong sense of pride in helping pupils achieve, going beyond parent expectations, and above pupil expectations of themselves.

“Teachers have helped me the most academically by pushing me outside of my comfort zone to reach my fullest potential.” –Sixth Form Pupil

Pupils at Cheltenham are stretched, challenged, and inspired to aim high in every aspect of their development. The focus is on nurturing the whole person, ensuring that pupils not only gain top academic results, but also develop the character, confidence and skills needed to thrive in life beyond school. Those who join Cheltenham College leave as well-rounded, grounded and ambitious young adults ready to make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Everyone comes together in Chapel four times per week, acting as the centre of College life and routine. Morning Chapel talks are given by pupils, members of staff or the Chaplains and explore different themes. The purpose of the talks is to develop the values of justice, peace, love, compassion, forgiveness and integrity. The Chapel is also an environment to support the wellbeing of pupils through providing a peaceful place used for broader reflection.

At the heart of College life is its House system: 11 Houses in total, with nine Boarding and two Day Houses, all situated around the campus. These small, close-knit communities are central to pupil well-being. One Sixth Form pupil shared: “What drew me to Cheltenham College the most was the pastoral care. Being an international student, College truly does their best to make it a home away from home.”

Beyond the classroom, Cheltenham College offers an exceptional co-curricular programme. Pupils are encouraged to explore and develop their interests through many of the activities on offer, from filmmaking and pottery to dissection and debating. The arts flourish at Cheltenham College, and pupils frequently attend concerts, plays, and exhibitions in Cheltenham, as well as in Oxford, Stratford, Bristol and London.

Sport plays a major role in school life. Cheltenham College is one of the strongest schools nationally across a broad range of sports, supported by top-level professional coaches and excellent facilities. From competitive team sports to individual pursuits, every pupil can find their passion, enjoy and excel.

The College’s ethos is encapsulated in the ‘5Cs’: Curiosity, Creativity, Character, Community, and Continuous Excellence. These values underpin all aspects of school life, encouraging pupils to explore their interests deeply, engage with the community, and strive for excellence in all endeavours.
